In January-February 2016, Russian seaports handled 105.9 mln t of cargo (+2.7%, year-on-year), says the press center of Association of Commercial Sea Ports.

Transshipment of dry bulk cargo totaled 45.6 mln t (+8.0%) including 18.1 mln t of coal (+5.5%), 6.3 mln t of containerized cargo (+2.4%), 4.4 mln t of ferrous metal (+0.1%), 4.4 mln t of grain (+34.3%), 3.3 mln t of  cargo carried by ferries  (+26.2%), 2.5 mln t of mineral fertilizers (+11.3%), 1.1 mln t of ore (up 1.9 times), 0.9 mln t of timber (+5.8%), 0.6 mln t of non-ferrous metal (+16.3%), 0.5 mln t of reefer cargo (+8.5%) and 0.5 mln t of metal scrap (-35.9%).

Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 60.3 mln t (-1.0%) including 22.1 mln t of oil products (-9.0%), 2.0 mln t of liquefied gas (-11.8%) and 35.6 mln t of crude oil (+5.6%).

Transshipment of export cargo totaled 85.9 mln t (+1.8%), import – 4.5 mln t (-5.0%), transit – 8.1 mln t (+6.5%), coastal trade cargo – 7.3 mln t (+15.7%).

In January 2016, Russian seaports handled 52.9 mln t of cargo (-2.8%, year-on-year), says the press center of Association of Commercial Sea Ports.

Transshipment of dry bulk cargo totaled 21.7 mln t (-3.8%) including 8.5 mln t of coal (-11.6%), 3.0 mln t of containerized cargo (-2.6%), 2.2 mln t of ferrous metal (-4.9%), 1.8 mln t of grain (-6.1%) 0.2 mln t of metal scrap (-33.6%). Transshipment of cargo carried by ferries climbed to 1.6 mln t (+16.2%), mineral fertilizers – to 1.4 mln t (+13.0%), ore – to 0.6 mln t (up 2.4 times), timber – to 0.5 mln t (+12.2%), non-ferrous metal – to 0.3 mln t (+19.7%), reefer cargo – to 0.2 mln t (+26.0%).

Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 31.2 mln t (-2.1%) including 11.4 mln t of oil products (-9.8%), 18.2 mln t of crude oil (+3.3%) and 1.2 mln t of liquefied gas (+4.1%).

Transshipment of export cargo totaled 43.0 mln t (-3.7%), imports – 2.2 mln t (-9.2%), transit – 4.2 mln t (+7.1%), coastal trade cargo – 3.4 mln t (+1.8%).

Russia’s exports may increase significantly this year because of further devaluation of the ruble, making Russian goods more competitive in the global market, according to recent statements from the Russian Association of Commercial Seaports and analysts of the Russian Ministry of Transport.

The biggest growth is expected in the country’s Far East, while the share of exports shipped via Baltic ports will gradually decline. With Russian exports to Southeast Asia growing, Far East ports’ will grow their market share of Russia’s containerized trade, according to Alex Misailov, CEO of FM Logistic Customs, one of Russia’s largest transport and logistics companies.

Imports in 2015 made up about 20 percent of Russia’s container traffic, and that figure is expected to decline in the future as exports grow. In the fourth quarter, imports were 18 percent of Russia’s container traffic, down from 25 percent in the same period of 2014. At the same time, exports have grown from 65 percent of Russia’s container trade in the fourth quarter of 2014 to 72 percent in 2015.

Oleg Belozerov, President of Russian Railways, and Askar Mamin, Chairman and President of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, met in Moscow on 18 January 2016 to discuss the further development of the Integrated Transport & Logistics Company (ITLC).

The development of the project for the ITLC envisages the formation of a single integrated platform in the Eurasia Economic Union space with the aim of uniting efforts to build the global competitiveness of the Eurasian corridor with optimal customer routes passing through the territory of countries participating in the project.

In this context, the parties emphasised that the ITLC’s initial practical results validate the company’s business idea as an integrator of container services.

The parties noted that for the successful implementation of the ITLC’s business model, it was important to continue harmonising national projects in the field of transport and logistics infrastructure, to provide a guaranteed logistics through service for freight delivery, develop a long-term tariff policy and synchronise the timetables of container trains.

These measures will help the Transport & Logistics Company to respond flexibly to market changes and offer the participants the most competitive logistics product.

In 2015, Russian seaports handled 676.7 mln t of cargo (+5.7%, year-on-year), says the press center of Association of Commercial Sea Ports.

Transshipment of dry bulk cargo totaled  312.2 mln t (+5.3%) including 123.2 mln t of coal (+6.0%), 34.4 mln t of grain (+15.1%), 26.2 mln t of ferrous metal (+12.2%), 21.6 mln t of cargo carried by ferries (up 1.9 times), 16.0 mln t of mineral fertilizers (+8.8%), 6.7 mln t of ore (+10.8%), 5.3 mln t of forest cargo (+10.7%) and 3.5 mln t of non-ferrous metal (+10.7%). Transshipment of containerized cargo fell to 40.1 mln t (-14.4%), metal scrap – 4.2 mln t (-8.8%) and reefer cargo – 3.2 mln t (-11.4%).

Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 364.5 mln t (+6.0%) including 202.1 mln t of crude oil (+8.0%), 146.0 mln t of oil products (+3.7%) and 12.9 mln t of liquefied gas (+5.1%).

Transshipment of export cargo totaled 539.1 mln t (+ 7.7%), import – 33.3 mln t (-23.3%), transit – 48.2 mln t (+1.2%), coastal trade cargo 56.1 mln t (+15.6%).

The year was full both of accomplishments and disappointments. The port complex of the country as usual demonstrated freight throughput growth, and once again largely Russian raw product exports contributed to cargo volumes gain. Inland shipping again teetered on the brink of collapse, now closer to a halt of transit cargo shipping.

Raw growth

By the 2015 year-end results cargo volumes handled at Russian seaports rose 3% y-o-y to about 650 million tonnes (provisional figures). More than half of this volume accounted for exports crude oil and oil products from Russia. This year, the increase in liquid bulk segment was 5% compared to last year. The third in terms of volumes handled at the country’s sea ports was coal, yet another Russian export raw commodity.

Despite oil prices dive, the upward trend will most likely continue in oil liquid bulk segment. In 2015, several new port projects were announced for the export of hydrocarbons. The total volume of oil product exports through Novorossiysk based Sheskharis Terminal is expected to jump by more than twofold in 2018 and amount to 20 million tonnes per year. Marine Terminal of Neftegazindustriya Group controlled by Vladimir Kogan of annual capacity of 11 million tonnes could be built on the Black Sea in the Bay of Tsemess, near PenaiCape. The terminal is projected to handle products produced at modernized Afipsky refineries. The terminal for handling Russian crude exports “Transneft – Port Kozmino” based in Vostochny, Primorskiy Kray plans to boost its capacity by 20% in 2017 to 36 million tonnes annually.

Transshipment of dry bulk cargo totaled 276.0 mln t (+1.1%) including 112.1 mln t of coal (+4.2%), 27.8 mln t of grain (+1.9%), 24.4 mln t of ferrous metal (+13.9%), 14.7 mln t of cargo carried by ferries (up 1.5 times), 14.5 mln t of mineral fertilizers (+6.7%), 6.2 mln t of ore (+7.7%), 4.8 mln t of forest cargo (+10.2%)  and 3.3 mln t of non-ferrous metal (+12.4%). Transshipment of containerized cargo fell to 36.6 mln t (-15.2%), metal scrap – to 3.8 mln t (-12.6%), refrigerated cargo – to 2.8 mln t (-14.4%).

Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 332.9 mln t (+4.6%) including 185.0 mln t of crude oil (+6.5%), 133.1 mln t of oil products (+2.4%) and 11.7 mln t of liquefied gas (+5.1%).

Transshipment of export cargo totaled 488.1 mln t (+ 5.5%), import cargo – 30.4 mln t (-24.4%), transit cargo – 43.9 mln t (+0.5%), coastal trade cargo – 46.5 mln t (+3.8%).

The volume of cargo carried along the Northern Sea Route in January-November 2015 increased 1.6 times, year-on-year, to 5,152,000 t, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Yury Kostin, Deputy Head of Rosmorrechflot (Federal Marine and River Transport Agency), as saying at the V International Forum “Arctic: Today And The Future”. According to him, 697 permits for passing NSR have been granted by December 4, 2015, including 124 permits for vessels flying the flags of foreign countries.

Yury Kostin also said that transit transportation along the Northern Sea Route has decreased from 1.176 mln t in 2013 and 274,000 t in 2014 to 39,000 t in 2015.

8 icebreakers including diesel-electric ones provide icebreaking services at the Northern Sea Route. In winter 2015, diesel-electric icebreaker Tor operated at port Sabetta, icebreaker Saint-Petersburg was deployed from spring.

On 26^th of October, 2015 was 2 years since the start of “Ust-Luga Express”, fast container block train running between Ust-Luga and Moscow with fixed weekly schedule. Transshipment of dry bulk cargo totaled 250.3 mln t (+1.5%) including 101.3 mln t of coal (+4.2%), 24.9 mln t of grain (+2.4%), 22.1 mln t of ferrous metal (+14.3%), 13.6 mln t of cargo carried by ferries (up 1.6 times), 13.2 mln t of mineral fertilizers (+6.8%), 5.6 mln t of ore (+4.6%), 4.4 mln t of timber (+10.6%) and 3.0 mln t of non-ferrous metal (+14.2%). Transshipment of containerized cargo fell to 33.3 mln t (-15.2%), metal scrap – to 3.6 mln t (-8.1%), refrigerated cargo – to 2.6 mln t (-15.2%).

Transportation of liquid bulk cargo totaled 303.5 mln t (+4.7%) including 167.7 mln t of crude ouil (+5.9%), 122.5 mln t of oil products (+3.5%) and 10.5 mln t of liquefied gas (+4.1%).

Transshipment of export cargo totaled 443.8 mln t (+ 5.7%), import cargo – 27.7 mln t (-24.3%), transit cargo – 39.6 mln t (-0.5%), coastal trade cargo – 42.7 mln t (+6.2%).
